Tropical storms and hurricanes have been given names since 1953.
Names alternate between male and female and always run in alphabetical order. Names of hurricanes that do a great amount of damage are retired and never used again.
Here is the list of the Hurricanes 2012 that have either hit or are scheduled to hit the Atlantic in 2012:
In the event that more than 21 named hurricanes occur in the Atlantic in a season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, etc.
So as announced on November 3rd 2012, Tony is promised to “visit” NYC area on upcoming Wednesday. Let’s just hope for the best as we are all still recovering (some better, some way worse) from Sandy.
